and He was never embarrassed about working hard, even if the results were failures. If someone as smart as Steve wasn't ashamed to admit trying, maybe I didn't have to be. At the end, those twin virtues of love and hard work didn't only result in steering Apple back to success, but in achieving simpler yet infinitely more difficult goals: learning to walk again after his liver transplant, or living to see his son graduate from high school. Some of these goals he met while others remained unfinished. As Simpson says, "We all — in the end — die in medias res. In the middle of a story. Of many stories. " In death there is another tantalizing Steveism: his last words, as recounted by Simpson, who was with him and the rest of his family at the end. "OH WOW. OH WOW. " He uttered these "monosyllables, " as Simpson calls them, a few hours before he died, after looking "at his sister Patty, then for a long time at his children, then at his life's partner, Laurene, and then over their shoulders past them. "
Simpson nevertheless presents her eulogy in the form of lessons she "learned from Steve, during three distinct periods, over the 27 years I knew him. "They're not periods of years, but of states of being, " she writes. "His full life. His illness. His dying. " Simpson has kept to herself on matters of Steve. As a brilliant novelist, she has never needed the penumbra of a superstar relative, and she doesn't owe us a single word now. It is gracious and generous for her to share her thoughts on so personal and private a topic — and I dare any stranger (like me) not to feel an even greater sense of loss after reading it. Some tidbits: Even as a feminist, my whole life I'd been waiting for a man to love, who could love me. For decades, I'd thought that man would be my father. When I was 25, I met that man and he was my brother. and Steve was like a girl in the amount of time he spent talking about love. Love was his supreme virtue, his god of gods. He tracked and worried about the romantic lives of the people working with him.
Last month, Apple touted that $100 billion had been paid to developers. Who knows? Maybe it'll be a billion dollar marketplace at some point in time. This doesn't happen very often. A whole new billion dollar market opens up. 360 million in the first 30 days, I've never seen anything like this in my career for software. At one point in the interview, Jobs actually called Eddy Cue because he was unsure of how developers were able to track their downloads and earnings: [Mr. Jobs calls Apple executive Eddy Cue] Hi, Eddy. How often can developers check in to get their reports? Daily? Got it, thanks, all right. Bye, bye. They can check into it whenever they want. It updates once a day. It's every developer, not just the big ones. Jobs also breaks down which apps he had on his iPhone: MR. WINGFIELD: What third-party apps are you using on your iPhone? MR. JOBS: I bought some games. Yelp. I like Yelp. I bought Mandarin. You know Mandarin Phrase? Have you seen that? MR. WINGFIELD: No. MR. JOBS: This one's cool.
