Also so many moms are like "I would never hire a smoker, even if they didn't smell, because it could *seep through their pores and onto my child*".... um, idk, its possible and I would honestly imagine it does to some minuscule degree, but like, we live in a major city, and your kid plays at a park around smokers and everyone ingests so many carcinogens - why is this the hill you want to die on? Because its not about the health of their kid. It's about the purity of their nanny and some weird class prejudice. If it was about the safety of your kid, you wouldn't be clutching pearls about it. You would bring it up if you smelled smoke on your nanny or mention in the interview that you can't provide smoke breaks or let a nanny who smells like smoke hold your kid or be in your home. That makes such perfect sense and I would honestly be a little disturbed if that wasn't the expectation. But the question "do you smoke? " is so invasive and they have no right to dictate or know about what I do on my own time.
Have some "weaknesses" lined up and ready to go. I always tried to put a positive spin on mine. Like "Sometimes it may look like I'm in a bad mood or frustrated, but it's just my 'resting concentration face'". Or "I get frustrated when simple communication breaks down". Or "I lack empathy for people who refuse to learn new processes". Another no-brainer is looking for key words in the job description and incorporating them into your resume and also using them in your interview. Easy example: Job requires attention to detail. Use attention to detail as one of your strengths during the verbal interview.
