If it is allowed by God, we must trust him and not doubt his love for us. Job's suffering, and ours too, has a purpose. That purpose is not always punishment, although sin does bring punishment. But that is only a small part of suffering's role in the life of the believer. Suffering proves the authenticity of one's faith and produces righteousness in the true believer. God is sovereign over every single thing. Job 27:3-4 – "As long as my breath is in me, and the Spirit of God is in my nostrils, my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. " This is how we all should live. The tongue is very powerful and persuasive. May it never be that we use it for sinful pursuits! When God Speaks… Job 38:3 – "Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you will make it known to me. " God's way never changes and He will require us all to make an account of our lives when we leave earth into eternity. If you leave earth without accepting Jesus, I have a feeling your account may start with God speaking this way. Don't wait another day to receive Jesus! Job 38:36 – "Who has put wisdom in the inward parts or given understanding to the mind? " This is a rhetorical question from God to showcase His power and wisdom. Job 40:2 – "Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it. " We are all found guilty and to argue with God that we are not is an absolute lie.
For it is written, "He catches the wise in their craftiness" (1st Cor 3:19). Job 38:2-3 "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man. I will question you, and you make it known to me. " Job finally gets his answer and it is directly from God, so God asks Job, "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth" (Job 38:4a), and tauntingly, "Who determined its measurements—surely you know" (Job 38:4a) or "Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loose the cords of Orion" (Job 38:31)? It's very much like what Isaiah wrote: "Woe to him who strives with him who formed him, a pot among earthen pots! Does the clay say to him who forms it, 'What are you making? ' or 'Your work has no handles'" (Isaiah 45:9)? Job 42:2 "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. " By the time God was finished with Job, Job was on his face, in the dirt, in repentance and brokenness, and by the way, that's the best place to be when you're enduring trials and you're not sure why.
Job's suffering Job and his friends were not aware that his (Job) suffering was inflicted by the devil who sought permission from the Lord to test the faithfulness of Job towards God. After Job suffered the loss of all his children and possession as well as well as being afflicted with sores all over his body, his friends Zophar, Bildad and Eliphaz sought to find meaning as to why all this occurrences. They tried to explain that it was because of sin that God punished man; this being a key argument of the law as written in Deuteronomy 28, wisdom literature in Psalms 37; 92; Proverbs 10:27-30 and Old Testament prophecies and that this could have been the case with Job. On the other hand, Job who had a strong belief on the justice of God accused God of injustice in the sense that He (God) was not adhering to his own rule considering Job believed that he has been faithful to God and has been careful to avoid any kind of evil. Such complaints against God's indifferences to evil can be found in Jeremiah 12:14; Habakkuk 1:2-4, some psalms and Ecclesiastes.
